Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

“When crunches can’t cut it — a little tuck can.”

What is Abdominoplasty?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a body-contouring procedure that helps you achieve a flatter, firmer, and more defined abdomen. It removes excess skin and fat while tightening the underlying muscles, restoring a smooth and toned midsection that diet and exercise alone often can’t achieve.

This procedure is especially popular after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging, when the skin loses elasticity and the abdominal muscles separate.

The procedure involves a gentle incision made low on the abdomen—easily hidden under clothing or swimwear. Through this, the surgeon removes extra skin and fat, repairs stretched muscles, and reshapes the waistline. The belly button is carefully repositioned for a natural and youthful look.

Good Candidates for Abdominoplasty

  • Have loose, sagging skin or excess fat around the abdomen that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise.

  • Have stretched or separated abdominal muscles (often after pregnancy or major weight loss).

  • Are close to your ideal weight and can maintain a stable weight afterward.

  • Are in good general health and don’t smoke (or are willing to stop before and after surgery).

  • Have realistic expectations about the results and understand that this is a body-contouring—not weight-loss—procedure.

Poor Candidates for Abdominoplasty

  • Have uncontrolled medical conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, or bleeding disorders).

  • Smoke regularly and are unable to quit for the recommended recovery period.

  • Have poor skin quality or unrealistic expectations about scarring or final results.

  • Are seeking a quick weight-loss solution rather than contour refinement.

Abdominoplasty vs Liposuction

  • Liposuction removes fat only.

  • Abdominoplasty removes skin, tightens muscles, and reshapes abdomen.

Patients with loose skin or muscle separation usually need a tummy tuck rather than liposuction alone.

Types of Abdominoplasty

  • Full Tummy Tuck: For those with significant skin laxity or muscle separation across the entire abdomen.

  • Mini Tummy Tuck: Focused below the belly button, perfect for mild lower tummy bulges.

  • Extended Tummy Tuck: Ideal for those with excess tissue extending to the sides or lower back.

How Abdominoplasty Surgery is Performed

  • performed under general anesthesia.

  • horizontal incision placed low on abdomen (hidden in underwear line).

  • excess skin and fat removed.

  • abdominal muscles tightened.

  • new position of navel created (in full tummy tuck).

  • surgery duration: 3–4 hours.

  • hospital stay: 1–2 days.

Scars fade gradually and are placed to remain discreet.

Recovery After Abdominoplasty

After surgery, you may experience:

  • swelling and bruising.

  • tightness or pulling sensation.

  • temporary discomfort.

Recovery timeline:

  • hospital stay: 1–2 days.

  • return to light activities: 10–14 days.

  • compression garment: 6–8 weeks.

  • exercise: 6–8 weeks.

  • final results: 3–6 months.

Complications

  • Swelling & Bruising: Expected for a few weeks after surgery.

  • Mild discomfort or tightness: Especially while standing upright in the first few days.

  • Temporary numbness: Due to stretching of skin nerves, which usually improves with time.

  • Seroma: Accumulation of fluid under the skin, sometimes requiring drainage.

  • Hematoma: A collection of blood beneath the skin flap.

  • Infection or delayed wound healing: Minimized with antibiotics and proper care.

  • Scarring: Usually hidden low on the abdomen, but may widen or darken in some cases.

  • Skin irregularities or asymmetry: Rare, and often correctable.

  • Fat necrosis: Small areas of fat tissue may harden beneath the skin.

  • Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism: Very rare but serious, prevented through early mobility and medication if needed.

With good pre-surgical preparation, adherence to post-operative instructions, and careful follow-up, most patients heal beautifully and enjoy smooth, long-lasting results.
