Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

“Lift more than just lids—lift your confidence.”

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a delicate surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the eyes by removing excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. With age, the eyelids often become heavy, puffy, or droopy, creating a tired or aged appearance. This surgery restores a more youthful, refreshed, and naturally alert look, while also improving vision in cases where drooping lids obstruct sight.

At our Islamabad practice, blepharoplasty is performed with a focus on natural results, facial balance, and patient safety, avoiding the “over-operated” look.

Markings for Blepharoplasty

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat that cause hooding or drooping.
It can:

  • Open up the eyes

  • Improve heaviness of the eyelids

  • Improve vision when sagging skin obstructs it

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery addresses:

  • Under-eye bags

  • Puffiness and bulging fat

  • Loose skin and wrinkles

In suitable patients, this can be performed through a hidden incision inside the eyelid, leaving no visible external scar.

Combined Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty

When aging affects both upper and lower eyelids, combined surgery provides more balanced and harmonious rejuvenation.

Aesthetic Variations

Fox Eye Lift

  • Creates a more elongated, almond-shaped eye with an upward tilt at the outer corner. Can be done with blepharoplasty plus canthopexy, threads, or lateral brow lift.

Cat Eye Lift

  • Similar to fox eye but gives a sharper, sultrier upward sweep to the outer corner. More dramatic than Fox Eye.

Puppy Eye Lift

  • A softer look where the outer corners of the eyes are subtly lowered instead of lifted, for a gentle, youthful appearance.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate?

Blepharoplasty may be suitable if you:

  • Are bothered by drooping eyelids or eye bags

  • Look tired despite being well rested

  • Are in good general health

  • Have realistic expectations

Both men and women commonly undergo eyelid surgery with high satisfaction rates.

How Blepharoplasty Is Performed

  1. Consultation & Assessment
Eyelid anatomy, skin quality, eye position, and facial balance are carefully evaluated.

  2. Anesthesia
Usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation. General anesthesia may be used in selected cases.

  3. Surgery

    • Incisions placed in natural eyelid creases or inside the eyelid

    • Excess skin and fat removed or repositioned

  4. Closure
Fine sutures are used to minimize scarring.

⏱ Procedure time: approximately 1–2 hours

Recovery After Eyelid Surgery

  • Swelling and bruising are common during the first week

  • Most patients return to routine activities within 7–14 days

  • Stitches, if present, are removed after about 5–7 days

  • Results continue to refine over several weeks

Discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

Complications

Like any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries some risks. While uncommon, patients should be aware of potential complications:

  • Bruising & Swelling: Usually temporary, part of normal healing.

  • Scarring: Minimal and usually hidden in natural creases, but rarely more noticeable.

  • Infection or Bleeding: Rare, but possible after surgery.

  • Asymmetry: Slight differences between the two eyes may occur.

  • Difficulty Closing Eyes: Temporary tightness is common; rarely, difficulty may persist.

  • Dry Eyes or Irritation: Can happen if the eyelids don’t close fully during healing.

  • Ectropion: This is the outward turning of the lower lid. Rare complication, may need correction.

  • Vision Disturbance: Blurry vision from swelling is usually temporary; serious vision loss is extremely rare.

  • Over- or Under-correction: Too much or too little tissue removal may affect results.
