Lip Reduction
“Perfect balance begins with perfect proportions.”
What is Lip Reduction?
Lip reduction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces the size of overly large lips and improves their shape and proportion with the rest of the face. It is commonly requested by patients who feel their lips are too thick, unbalanced, or attract unwanted attention. Lip reduction can be performed for the upper lip, lower lip, or both, depending on the patient’s concern.
The goal is natural-looking, proportionate lips — smaller, but still soft, symmetrical, and balanced with facial features.
Who may benefit from lip reduction?
You may be a suitable candidate if you have:
-
naturally very large or thick lips.
-
disproportion between upper and lower lip.
-
difficulty closing lips completely.
-
lip enlargement after previous filler/fat injections.
-
aesthetic concern affecting confidence.
-
congenital or ethnic lip enlargement.
Lip reduction is also performed in patients who previously had lip augmentation that is no longer desired.
How lip reduction surgery is performed
Lip reduction is a day-care surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia for most patients.
-
markings are made to define the new lip shape.
-
a small strip of tissue is removed from inside the lip.
-
incision is hidden on the inner surface of the lip.
-
lips are reshaped and sutured carefully.
-
procedure usually takes 45–60 minutes.
Because the incision is inside the lip, the scar remains hidden and not visible from outside.

Recovery after lip reduction
-
swelling is common for the first few days.
-
mild discomfort treated with medicines.
-
soft diet is recommended initially.
-
stitches usually dissolve on their own.
-
most patients return to normal routine in 5–7 days.
Final shape continues to refine over 4–6 weeks as swelling settles.
Complications
Lip reduction is a safe and straightforward procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon, but as with any surgical intervention, certain risks may occur. These may include:
-
Swelling and bruising: Common in the first few days and usually resolve on their own.
-
Temporary numbness or altered sensation: Often improves as the tissues heal.
-
Asymmetry or contour irregularities: Rare, and can usually be corrected with minor adjustments if needed.
-
Infection or delayed healing: Minimized by proper hygiene and postoperative care.
-
Scarring or firmness at the incision line: Typically fades with time as the incision is placed inside the mouth.
With meticulous technique and attentive aftercare, these complications are uncommon, and patients generally achieve smooth healing with naturally refined, balanced lips.
