Fat Grafting

“Taking from where you don’t want it, and giving where you do. Nature's filler.”

What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, is a natural way to enhance and restore volume by using your body’s own fat. The procedure involves gently harvesting fat, via liposuction, from areas where it is unwanted (such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks), processing it, and then carefully injecting it into areas that need contouring or rejuvenation (such as face, breasts or buttocks).

Because the material comes from your own body, fat grafting is safe, biocompatible, and long-lasting. It not only improves shape and volume but also enhances skin quality, giving a softer, more youthful look.

Benefits of Fat Grafting

  • uses the patient’s own tissue.

  • natural look and feel.

  • improves skin quality due to stem cells.

  • no risk of allergic reaction.

  • long-term results in many cases.

What Can It Do?

Fat grafting is a versatile procedure used for both aesthetic enhancement and reconstructive purposes. Common indications include:

  • Facial rejuvenation

    • Restoring volume loss in cheeks, temples, under-eyes, and jawline.

    • Softening deep folds and wrinkles (nasolabial folds, marionette lines).

    • Improving contour after trauma or surgery.

  • Breast enhancement

    • Natural breast augmentation.

    • Correction of contour irregularities after breast surgery (lumpectomy, reconstruction, or implant rippling).

  • Buttock augmentation (Brazilian Butt Lift)

    • Enhancing shape, projection, and symmetry.

  • Hand rejuvenation

    • Restoring volume to thin, veiny, or aged hands.

  • Scar and contour correction

    • Filling soft tissue defects after liposuction or injury.

  • Improving depressed scars, burns, and contour deformities

  • Skin quality improvement

    • Fat contains stem cells and growth factors that may enhance skin texture and elasticity.

Fat Grafting vs Fillers

  • Fat grafting: natural, longer-lasting, surgical, longer recovery.

  • Fillers: non-surgical, temporary, immediate results.

Your surgeon will advise the best option based on goals.

fat grafting injection

The Fat Grafting Procedure

  • It is performed under local or general anesthesia (depending on area and the amount of fat to be injected).

  • It is a minimally invasive procedure.

  • The required fat is aspirated via liposuction from the belly, back or thighs.

  • The harvested fat is processed to remove impurities and to make it more injectable, while making sure not to harm the fat & stem cells in it.

  • The processed fat (microfat or nanofat) is injected into the required areas.

  • It is either an outpatient procedure or only requires a short hospital stay.

  • Customized approach is used for each patient.

Recovery After Fat Grafting

  • mild swelling or bruising may be present initially.

  • recovery depends on donor and recipient sites.

  • return to routine activities in a few days to a week.

  • final results gradually improve over the course of a few months.

Results and Longevity

  • some of the fat is naturally reabsorbed (~30% - 40%).

  • the remaining fat can be long-lasting.

  • final results settle over several months.

  • repeat sessions may be required for optimal volume.

Complications

Fat grafting is generally safe since it uses your own tissue, but like any surgical procedure, it carries potential risks:

  • Swelling & bruising – common and temporary.

  • Pain or discomfort – usually mild and short-lived.

  • Infection – rare but possible at donor or recipient sites.

  • Asymmetry – uneven fat take or distribution.

  • Fat absorption / partial loss of volume – some of the transferred fat may not survive, requiring touch-up sessions.

  • Lumps, nodules, or irregularities – if fat clusters or hardens.

  • Oil cysts or calcifications – due to fat necrosis.

  • Overcorrection or undercorrection – depending on fat survival rate.

  • Changes in skin sensation – usually temporary.

  • Very rare complications: fat embolism (if fat enters a blood vessel), contour deformities, or skin breakdown.
